The youth Café is conducting a project aimed at engaging the youth against corruption and the closing civic space in Kenya. The photo and video competition is one of the activities in this project.
About The Contest
Corruption is a cancer that is slowly diminishing our democracy and it ought to be fought through a multi-approach technique. It is only by recognizing the existence of the problem and finding actionable solutions in various sectors, that we will eradicate this cancer. This media contest is a step taken by The Youth Café to increase the engagement of Kenyan youths in the fight against corruption and the closing civic space.
We take advantage of the interconnectedness we enjoy today through technology to inspire corruption storytelling. Storytelling through photos and videos will create awareness, increase activism, and educate youths to take positive steps towards good governance. Since corruption in Kenya is rampant, majority of the people have experienced it in diverse ways.
We seek representations of people’s scenarios in this context, presented in authentic ways. We also expect to learn more about corruption in Kenya through your photo and video submissions. As much as we believe that the youth are future leaders, we also believe that the youth are leaders today. This is a good chance for all youths to join hands in combating corruption. Our quest for reducing corruption is urgent!
Soft and hard corruption practices are deeply rooted in many systems and policies in the world. Even with active policies and structures to reduce corruption, accountability and transparency have to be deeply rooted in the values and culture of a nation. Coronavirus pandemic has tested the limits that countries have on integrity. More tests in form of economic frustrations and political uncertainty among others will continue to challenge the beliefs that people and their leaders have. It is upon institutions to create robust systems that eradicate systemic corruption and vows for a fair and justifiable life.
