Elections Observation Group (ELOG) is a long-term and permanent citizen platform comprising 18 Civil Society and Faith-Based Organizations with a mandate to strengthen democracy in Kenya and the African region through monitoring and observation of electoral processes. ELOG employs an electoral cycle approach, which entails observation in the pre-election, during the election and the post-election environment. The approach informs wholesome observation and reporting of thematic and topical issues, tracking recommendations and providing updated and relevant information to the Kenyan citizens.

General Election Process From the Ballot to the Portal

The 2022 general elections were the third general election and the fourth presidential election since the promulgation of the Constitution 2010. They were also the 7th periodic general elections since the re-introduction of multi-party democracy in Kenya in 1991. They were transitional elections for Kenya as they marked the end of the incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta’s two terms in office. Similarly, there were 22 transitions at the county governors’ level due to the expiry of respective 2 term limits. Since the re-introduction of multi-party politics in 1991, Kenyan elections have remained very high-stakes affairs that are characterized by heightened socio-economic, political and ethnic tensions.

The international community has now acknowledged vulnerability as a severe obstacle to development due to the damage caused by exogenous shocks and stressors to which countries are increasingly being exposed. These shocks span diverse domains, such as terms of trade fluctuations, natural disasters, supply disruptions, conflicts, civil unrest, and unprecedented shocks such as the COVID-19 pandemic. It is evident that low national income, often measured by Gross National Income per capita (GNI pc), is a weak measure of development, material welfare, or well-being.

The Climate Dictionary

Climate change adaptation refers to actions that help reduce vulnerability to climate change's current or expected impacts like weather extremes and natural disasters, sea-level rise, biodiversity loss, or food and water insecurity. Many adaptation measures need to happen locally, so rural communities and cities have a big role to play. Such measures include planting crop varieties more resistant to drought and practicing regenerative agriculture, improving water storage and use, managing land to reduce wildfire risks, and building stronger defenses against extreme weather like floods and heat waves.

The youth needs to note that training content for youth participation must be context-specific. The content of this manual must be adjusted to the local, social, geographical, cultural, and political circumstances, and there is no standard training methodology and approach that can be replicated everywhere on the continent.

Following a clarion call by the youth during the 2021 African Governance Architecture (AGA) Regional Youth Consultations, the AGA under the auspices of the AGA Youth Engagement Strategy spearheaded the development of a Comprehensive Guide and Facilitator and Participants Manuals on Youth Participation in Political and Electoral Processes in Africa. The Guide and accompanying Manuals were developed in collaboration with the Common Market for East and Southern Africa Secretariat (COMESA) with the support of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation- SDC. The manuals underwent a painstaking research, review, and validation process with the full involvement of youth leaders and experts across the five regions of the continent.
