On the 29th of September, 2021, The Youth Café was invited to give a lecture to the honors students at the University of Illinois at Chicago about a Global Perspective on Social Media Activism. We discussed global Social Media Activism and highlighted some case studies in Africa, where we spoke about the role of the youth in social media activism and the role of social media in shaping the contemporary public sphere and our democracy.
Global Media and Information Literacy Week, commemorated annually, is a major occasion for stakeholders to review and celebrate the progress achieved towards “Media and Information Literacy for All”. Global Media and Information Literacy Week 2021, hosted by South Africa, will take place from 24-30 October 2021.
Activists, Campaigners, Unionists, Journalists: Free Twitter Power Boot Camp coming up to build people power. The Youth Café is supporting Social Movement Technologies, Africans Rising, Girls First Network from Africa and Laudato Si’ Movement to promote the Twitter Power Boot Camp for Activists and Campaigners waging justice against big adversaries and journalists across the world.
The Youth Café was privileged to participate in a research project “Administration Costs Research Project (ACRP)” conducted by Humentum. The Youth Café, through its staff actively took part in a series of recommendations and interventions led by Humentum to address insufficient cost coverage in project grants in ten countries around the world.
On 30th September 2021 The Youth Café conducted the physical video/photo award ceremony at their offices at Kitisuru Gardens to officially present the winners with their awards. The event was broadcasted live on our Facebook page. Several key players attended including the 3 finalists, members of The Youth Cafe, invited guests Amos Onyango and Nerima Wako-Ojiwa and our keynote speaker, Mr Samuel Kimeu, the Executive Director of Africa’s Voices Foundation.
The Youth Café conducted a virtual video/photo award ceremony on the 23rd of September 2021. The theme of the project was to “capture your reality of corruption and governance”. Several key players attended including our participants, members of The Youth Café, members of the public and our keynote speaker, Mr. Samuel Kimeu, the Executive Director of Africa’s Voices Foundation.
The Agenda 2063 youth dialogue incorporated different Non-Governmental Organizations that presented the work that they do and their recommendations as to what they believe can be done to advance the needs of African youth. There is a desire for increased collaboration and support between partners and donors, and possibly good opportunities for improving support for digital rights work. The Youth Café was invited by The Kenya ICT Action Network to take part in a partners and donors roundtable during the Kenya Internet Governance Forum (KIGF) 2021 week. The objective of the roundtable was to bring together Donors and Social Justice Organisations to create awareness and appraise each other on the situation of digital rights in Africa.
The Youth Café is excited to announce that we will be speaking at The 2063 Academy Youth Dialogue. In collaboration with NEPAD Planning and Coordinating Agency, i4Policy, Facebook and Maghreb Economic Forum, the 3rd edition of the 2063 Academy will take place from 13 to 17 September 2021.
